Real-time performance monitoring helps CAFC predict maintenance needs
CAFC chose ABB ACQ580 drives for water and wastewater and ABB AbilityTM Condition Monitoring for powertrains to anchor a digital solution that will optimize costs, reduce maintenance downtime and enable predictive, condition-based maintenance. An ABB Drive Connectivity Panel provides an easy and secure connection to enable digital services.
Before widespread adoption, CAFC partnered with ABB on a pilot project for digitizing their powertrains. Enabled by smart connected technology, the system allows users to view all operational parameters and identify anomalies. For motors, this includes temperature, vibration and too-frequent starts. For drives, the system monitors and analyzes voltage, currents, torques, overloads, temperature, component wear and condenser or fan degradation.
Another pilot project was conducted at the Rivegnano sewage treatment plant. After first attempting condition monitoring through a dedicated Internet connection, the team decided to use the ABB Drive Connectivity Panel, which automatically connects to the network that provides the best signal. This solution has proven reliable even in areas where coverage is poor. It is easy to install, configure and commission for immediate access to cloud-based services.
These projects have proven the value of ABB’s digital solutions. Now, instead of sending out a mechanic and an electrician for periodic maintenance on all motors and pumps, the company deploys only a mechanic for on-site repairs, because the electrical parameters are monitored remotely.
“With ABB’s Condition Monitoring we always know the situation in real time…giving us objective, accurate and reliable measurements.”
