CAFC seeks solutions to continually improve water delivery management
Italian municipal water utility CAFC is turning to digital technology to accomplish three key objectives: maximize reliability, increase plant availability and minimize the need for maintenance. The company is focusing its efforts on solutions that improve water delivery, sewage handling and water treatment. They aim to reduce energy consumption while optimizing plant processes and maintenance effectiveness.
Located in the mountainous region of northeast Italy, CAFC serves 122 municipalities, providing a reliable supply of drinking water as well as handling sewage and water treatment needs for the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia area. About 150 technical employees across this territory perform periodic checks and needed maintenance when failures occur. To optimize the effectiveness of these maintenance workers, the company is standardizing their equipment with highly reliable digital products and adding remote monitoring capabilities.
“Digitization brings specific benefits, allowing us to visualize the process and equipment status remotely. This has helped us transform maintenance practices… now we can perform maintenance based on the actual condition, rather than on a set time schedule.”
Tomaso Larice, Maintenance Manager, CAFC
Being able to monitor equipment status remotely is an important requirement for CAFC. For example, the Mount Lussari ski area, at an elevation of 2,000 meters, has limited accessibility during winter. The resort’s restaurants and other businesses depend on a reliable water supply, so the ability to detect possible equipment failures from the utility’s main office is essential. With remote condition monitoring, CAFC can schedule maintenance in the summer, when access is easier.
