To map and control its energy usage throughout the mill’s pulping process, Waggeryd uses ABB Ability™ Condition Monitoring service enabled by Smart Sensors, along with the Digital Powertrain Energy Appraisal. This provides mill operators with real-time condition and status information for hundreds of motors and other assets so they can optimize energy usage while enabling predictive maintenance.

Waggeryd digitized its most critical production processes by adding 156 Smart Sensors to ABB and non-ABB motors, pumps, and general machinery. The sensors enable the ABB Ability Condition Monitoring platform to measure power consumption, speed, vibration frequencies and temperature.

Waggeryd leveraged this data as part of a new ABB detailed energy efficiency report called ABB Ability Digital Powertrain Energy Appraisal. Results from the report helped the mill manager to pinpoint the exact locations where additional energy savings can be achieved across the entire powertrain. 

Not only has Waggeryd been able to analyze its energy usage on an asset-by-asset basis, but it can use the data they capture to provide an early warning for when an asset may require maintenance, reducing the potential for unexpected downtime due to equipment failure.
