Powered by waterfalls, enabled by ABB
In 2020, Maid of the Mist added two new all-electric catamaran ferries to its fleet. The vessels are powered by high-capacity batteries supplied and integrated by ABB as part of the vessels’ power and propulsion solution. This also includes an onshore charging system that allows the vessels to recharge in just seven minutes during boarding – with hydroelectric power generated from the falls themselves. ABB Ability Marine Remote Diagnostic System will monitor the performance of the onboard equipment and enable predictive maintenance.

The first all-electric vessels built in the US, each ferry has enough battery power to allow its electric propulsion motors to reach an output of 400kW, with the power setup controlled by ABB’s Power and Energy Management system. Maid of the Mist also relies on the ABB Ability Marine Remote Diagnostic System to monitor conditions and schedule predictive maintenance so the ships keep sailing without unexpected downtime.
