Empowering insights
Technology is the foundation for knowing more, doing better and balancing the needs of the environment and economy. But technology alone won’t save the planet. It is the people behind technology that make the difference. A recent article in the Harvard Business Review6 suggests that just 20% of employees today are empowered by digital tools to support decision-making. This is a concerning statistic as it is people, not machines, who must be the driving force and agents of change. If we are to empower all workers to make better decisions, we must create access to data-rich systems that, as one expert we interviewed said, can “clear more space for facts.” With this comes improved insight into the effects of decisions on operational performance as well as environmental impacts. As consumers, we encounter digital systems all the time, from our smartphones to the supermarket checkout. If we are to truly democratize access to data and guarantee long-term use, digital industrial systems must offer the same level of simplicity, immediacy and effectiveness. This means high-quality, contextualized user experiences, intuitive interfaces and complete, reliable data.
— Key Insight Simplifying access to operational data and increasing overall transparency will be critical in helping businesses to deliver billions of better decisions.
